Con - Dem'd To Die At Work

The new Tory led coalition government's aims to demolish the health and safety culture of this country along with the privatisation of the NHS is becoming more evident as details of their intentions not mentioned in either of the party's manifestos.

In a week when this became clearer, Hilda Palmer from GM Hazards, highlighted the new Hazards campaign at this weeks Institute of Employment Rights health and safety conference in Liverpool held 13th July.

In an enthusiastically received speech, she made it clear that increases in death and injury at work is the inevitable cost of the Con-Dem coalition's plans for health and safety legislation.

In doing so she also reminded the conference that the government currently are consulting with the British people over their plans to remove legislation which is suggested by the public as being costly, time consuming and unnecessary. Health and safety is one of the main targets of this as can be shown by the health and safety review being undertaken at present by Lord Browne (Ex BP Chairperson).

Urging all delegates to access the government's website your freedom and suggest the abolition of the anti- trade union laws, she questioned the value of government consultation:

" We have been consulted to death. But every time we voted for something they told us that we cannot have this and we cannot have that because we are only safety reps."

But the highlight of her presentation was around the new campaign from Hazards - 'We Didn't Vote To Die At Work'

Urging all delegates to become involved in the campaign, she said that the campaign had been launched at the recent Hazards conference with over 300 delegates buying and wearing the campaign T-Shirts. In addition, posters were distributed to be used by USRs back in their workplace.

A video of Hilda's presentation will be available shortly to be viewed on the Institute of Employment Rights website
